Butterick 5022 School Shorts

I have been holding onto this post for over a month.

 I admit I like to post good stuff.  This is good but there were hurt feelings while sewing.  I don't sew well when I am mad, hurt, hungry, angry or upset.

After all the drama with fitting the Butterick 6061 shorts for Dear Daughter I went back to her TNT shorts pattern.  The Butterick 5022.  She still has a pair of short from this pattern I made her over 4 years ago.  She still wears them too.

Look at the difference between the Butterick 6061 and the 5022 pattern pieces.  The B6061 altered pattern is the brown paper and the B5022 is the tissue.  That's aLOT of difference.

For a muslin these look pretty good.  The crotch fits, the waist fits, the butt fits.  What else can go wrong?

I added elastic into the back waistband to help with the vast difference between her hip & waist measurements.  She wears a belt most days anyways so I know it will cover the elastic.

Look how straight that side seam is.  That's a great fitting pair of shorts.

Overall, I think the fit is perfect & these shorts are a go!

The first "real" pair of shorts are a stretch twill.  Three simple pieces.  (I changed up the pocket).  Easy enough.

This pattern only takes 1 yard of 56+" wide fabric.  Perfect!

I had her try on the shorts before finishing the waistband to make sure she liked them.  She was happy with the fit.  I added belt loops per her request.

After I finished the belt loops Girl M tried on the shorts and was happy with them.

So my next pair were a Dark Indigo denim.  Same pattern, same everything but...........

She HATED them.  She didn't like the length, she didn't like the rear or the waist height.

So what do you do once you've purchased fabric for 6 pairs of shorts from Fabric.com?  I fixed what she didn't like (AGAIN!), sewed up the rest of the fabric and they are now neatly folded on my sewing table until she comes and ask for them.

I refuse to take the shorts to her.  She's seen them sitting on the cutting table but has yet asked for them or taken them to her room.  The spot on the leg is from my camera lens.

I'll let you know how long they sit here, waiting for her to wear them.  So as much as I hate to admit it, NO MORE SEWING FOR HER.  It breaks my heart because this year she is in high school and there are no uniforms.  The dress code is pretty lax and she can wear almost anything.

I guess I've learned my lesson.

Frankenpattern Blue Abstract ITY Knit Crossover Dress with McCall 7160 Skirt

I thought that this Powder Blue/Bubblegum/Brown Multi Abstract ITY Knit fabric was telling me it wanted to be a crossover top, full skirt dress with elastic waist and 3/4 length sleeves.

I used my McCall 7160 skirt pattern for a full, flowy skirt.  I frankenpatterned the top from the Butterick 6821 Top.  Instead of gathered shoulders I used my TNT knit top pattern and armhole and sleeve templates.

I was so excited when I received this fabric from Fabricmartfabrics.com I was ready to cut out the dress pattern that evening, except.................. I didn't have the correct color fold over elastic.  It took two whole days to receive it from Ebay.  Sometimes you never know if the color is correct but I was lucky this time, it matched perfect!

I received many compliments when I wore it to Church this past Sunday.  The sleeve length was perfect because I didn't need a cardigan during the service.  They like it very cool in there!

I am in LOVE with this dress!

I'm in the process of cataloging my patterns.  It seems I need to have a better system.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated.  P.S.  I do not have a cell phone.......

White Ponte Knit Straight Skirt & Button Help

I finally adjusted the knit slim skirt pattern from here with a FBBA (full belly/butt adjustment) from this blog.  I did the adjustment both on the front and the back skirt pattern. The skirt hangs so much better now.

I also made a slip to wear under the skirt.

 I used my skirt pattern minus the hem and waist seam allowances.  I also omitted the back darts.  It's a perfect slip for more skirts to be made up!

I bought this tray with a spout on a trip to Harbor Freight.  It's perfect to dump out buttons and search through them and just pour them back into the jar when I'm done.  Most of the time I don't even miss!

Simplicity 2539 Jacket

I liked the Simplicity 2539 jacket pattern after seeing the vest version posted on sdbev blog.  She gave high reviews for the vest.

I knew I had to make a muslin because of the kimono style sleeves and the lines of the jacket.  I had to make my usual adjustments.  I am so happy I made the muslin to do a practice run for the pattern sewing.  I was confused, but I worked through it and was pretty impressed with the first outcome.

I had to make a sway back adjustment of 2" at center back, tapering to nothing at the side seams.

I didn't add a button but I am so happy that the muslin met at center front!

Center fronts match up!

For my proportion fitting the jacket needs to be 26.5" in length or 30".  I chose the 26.5" for a 2:1 ratio.  I had to shorten the pattern and the pocket pieces 2-1/2"

I love the hidden pockets.  They are so cute!

I thought that a suiting type fabric would work nice for this jacket.  I like that the jacket is unlined and I serged all the seams.

The jacket only took 2.5 yards of fabric.  A great price for a jacket $6.75!

The waffle weave fabric had a small amount of silver thread woven through it.  I liked that the fabric was semi-soft but still had a little hand to it.  It didn't ravel too bad.

Dear hubby chose the buttons.  I couldn't decide between two and he thought the white ones looked the best.  Classy without being too much.

Overall I give this jacket pattern a B, maybe even a A- if I could think of another fabric choice this would be good for.  I will keep this in my rotation and I think it would look nice with my white ponte knit sheath dress.
